The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested altogether 859 government officials during the last 28 months on various charges of corruption. Additionally, it has been monitoring the activities of more than 300 officials till filing of this report last evening.
Sources in the ACC have said that the network of the ACC has been operating throughout country for nabbing the culprits responsible for grabbing public and private money as well as properties.
The ACC men extended the networks into the activities of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripkkha (RAJUK), Dhaka North City Corporation (NSCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), Sub-Registry Offices, state owned banks and private banks across the country.
The ACC action led to the arrest of 288 government officials working in public sector corporations and autonomous bodies in the country. Additionally, 399 people were arrested on various charges from different places in the country over their involvement in pilferage of state property.
In the first five months of the current year, the ACC men with the help of the other law enforcing agencies took 182 persons into custody from different parts of the country.
In the 11 months beginning on 27 July last year, the ACC received five lakh complaints from citizens against organizations responsible for providing public service, according to ACC sources. The sources, quoting review reports of the ACC regarding the allegations submitted to it, said that most service providing organization officials have been found to be corrupt.
ACC officials, while reviewing the complaints made through the hotline, reached the conclusion that most officials in government organizations and autonomous bodies needed to be netted in due course of time.
The ACC officials arrested one of the directors of RAJUK and two other people in April 2016. In the same month, the RAJUK authorities arrested a Bangladesh Road Transport Authority assistant director on charges of bribery. Police also arrested an assistant director of RAJUK and recovered Taka two crore, 62 lakh 50 thousand and 602 from his possession.
An assistant inspector of the Education Ministry was arrested in May last year with taka two lakh in his possession. Land Acquisition Officer Md Setaful Islam of Perojpur was arrested by the ACC with Taka five crore in January last year. Police arrested an administrative officer of the Land Ministry last April and also recovered stolen money from his possession.
The ACC, following the arrests, filed formal cases against them. The sources have revealed that as these people have powerful positions and connections, in many cases police did not take proper steps against them.A senior director of the ACC told the Asian Age that laws are being enacted to arrest the culprits who have been grabbing money from the state exchequer and other properties.
