Flood kills 2 in Ctg, 6 upazilas inundated


Heavy downpour for last four consecutive days flooded six upazilas in Chattogram causing immense sufferings to thelocal people.

Two persons were killed at Fatichari upazila due to flood. Among the victims, a woman aged about 55 washed away while another was killed in a landslide triggered by flood. "District administration has given TK 20,000 to the each victim's family," Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Habibur Rahman told BSS.

He said half portion of the port city and district went under knee to waist deep water as severe flood has been reported in Satkhania, Hathazari, Chandonish, Raozan, Rangunia and Fatikchhari upazilas of the district.

At least four regional highways, including Bandarban-Satkhania, Hathazari-Rangamati, Hathazari-Khagrachhari and Hathazari-Oxygen, were inundated causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

People were seen wading through the knee-deep water on Chattogram-Rangamati road and Bandarban-Satkhania road on Tuesday. Besides, traffic remained suspended on the roads due to the flood. Fish enclosures, houses and business establishments were submerged by the rain water.

Patenga Meteorological office recorded 21.8 millimetres of rainfall during the last 24 hours ending 3 pm today. A total 394 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in last four days causing serious disruption to civic life, and port and businesses activities in the city.

All rivers, canals and drains here were full to the brim of floodwater caused by the torrential rainfall coupled with full tide water in the port city and district. Locals said embankments of Halda and Shanko Rivers in different points were collapsed, increasing the woes of locals.

The inhabitants of low-lying areas of the district have been asked to take shelter in local educational institutions, said officials at District administration.
