A total of 37 people were killed and 38 others were injured in separate road accidents across the country over the past four days starting from last Friday, the day before Eid.
Today (Monday), a total of 14 people were killed and 23 were injured in Nilphamari, Jhenidah and Magura districts.
In Nilphamari, at least 11 people were killed and 18 others injured when a bus hit a pick-up van at Dhalagach in Syedpur-Bypass area of Syedpur upazila on Sunday night. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Ashoke Kumar Pal, assistant superintendent of Syedpur (Sadar Circle) police, said the accident took place in the area around 10:15 pm when a Dhaka-bound bus hit the pick-up van carrying some young people, leaving all of them dead on the spot and 20 others injured.
Of the injured, twelve were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Shahjahan Pasha, officer-in-charge of Syedpur Police Station, said the group hired the pick-up for making a joyous trip on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and met the tragedy while returning home from a picnic spot in Dinajpur.
In Jhenidah a motorcyclist was killed as a microbus hit his vehicle in Arappur area of the town around 12. The deceased was identified as Azizur Rahman, 40, son of Habibur Rahman of Kumrabaria village of the district.
Office of Jhenidah Fire Service Station Dilip Kumar Sarkar said Azizur was returning to the town from Kushtia and as he reached Arappur area, his motorbike got hit from behind by the microbus. He was seriously injured then.
When the locals rushed him to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital the duty doctor declared him dead, Dilip said. The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy.
In Magura, another man and his daughter were killed and five others were injured as a bus hit a three-wheeler at Kestopur area in Sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Mamtaj Ali, 42, and his daughter Sumaiya, 7, of Harispur village in Khalisha upazila. Officer-in-charge of Magura Police Station Ilias Hossain said a Jashore-bound bus hit a three wheeler around 3pm killing the father and his daughter on the spot and injuring five others. The injured were admitted to Magura General Hospital.
Yesterday (Sunday), 11 people, including two siblings, were killed in road accidents in Cox's Bazar, Noakhali, Cumilla, Tangail and Thakurgaon districts, according to reports that reached the UNB desk.
In Cox's Bazar, Babu Dey, 16, son of Niranjan Dey of Kuruskul union in Sadar upazila, was killed as a CNG-run autorickshaw hit him in the afternoon. Locals said the teenage boy was hit smack-on by the three-wheeler around 3:30 pm, leaving him injured.
He was taken to Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Farid Uddin.
In Noakhali, three people died while another was injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Laksam-Sonaimuri road at Rampur in Sonaimuri upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as CNG driver Rakib, 25, son of Ruhul Amin, Mizan, 31, and his brother Belal, 39, sons of Bachchu Miah of Kathalia village in the upazila.
Quoting locals, Abdullah-Al Masum, additional superintendent of police (Sonaimuri-Chatkhali circle), said the Noakhali-bound bus collided head-on with three-wheeler around 10 am, leaving the trio dead on the spot and the other injured.
On information, police recovered the bodies and took injured Abul, 29, to Noakhali General Hospital, he said.
In Cumilla, a woman was killed as a bus hit her at Kalakachua on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Burichang upazila.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Officer-in-charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station Mahbubur Rahman said the bus dashed the woman around 1am, leaving her dead on the spot.
The body was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he said.
In another accident, Jewel Mollah, 35, a travel agency trader and son of Abdul Kuddus of Belbhuj area of Barura municipality, was killed as a microbus plunged into a roadside ditch in the early hours.
Officer-in-charge of Barura Police Station Azam Uddin Mahmud said after the accident, locals rushed the victim to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
In Tangail, a bus crashed into a motorcycle at Solla on Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge road around 2 pm, killing its three riders on the spot.
The identities of the deceased were not available immediately. Sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge (East) Police Station Nur-e-Alam said they seized the bus but its driver and his helper managed to flee.
In Thakurgaon, two motorcyclists -- Faruk and Kawsar of Parpugi village in sadarupazila -- died on the spot after a minibus hit their motorcycle at Mathurapur in the upazila headquarters around 3 pm.
The accident also left another rider injured, witnesses said.
Locals rushed injured Rabiul of the same village to Thakurgaon Modern Hospital, said Abdul Latif Mia, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station.
On Friday and Saturday at least 12 people, including two school teachers, were killed in separate road accidents in Chattogram, Sylhet, Chandpur, Habiganj and Jhenidah districts.
In Chattogram, three members of a family were killed in a head-on collision between two buses in Sahgodi Nimtoli of Patiya upazila around 11 am on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Hridoy Ranjan Das, 70, a teacher hailing from Chiringa area of Cox's Bazar, his wife Basanti Das, 55, and their son-in-law Shibakar Das, 40.
Hridoy and Basanti died on the spot and Shibhakar sustained severe injuries in the accident.
Locals rushed the injured to Chittagong Medical Collage Hospital (CMCH) where the on-duty doctor declared Shibankar dead, said Mizanur Rahman, in-charge of Patiya Highway Police outpost.
In another road crash, two people - Kiron Bala Das, 60, and Lutfur Rahman, 30, died when a bus hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control over the steering on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Shuklalhat in Barabkunda around at 11:45 am on Friday.
Meanwhile, an unidentified woman was killed after being hit by a human-hauler while crossing Dhaka- Chattogram highway at Madambibirhat in Sitakunda upazila around 5 pm on Friday.
In Habiganj, the headmaster of a primary school was killed as a bus ran over him at Uttarbazar in Chunarughat upazila headquarters on Saturday noon.
The deceased was identified as Didar Ahmed, 40, the headmaster of Badhberi Government Primary School in the upazila.
The accident took place around 12:15 pm when Didar was going back to his home by a motorbike, witnesses said. As he tried to overtake a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, he fell down from the bike and a speeding bus ran him over, leaving him dead on the spot.
In Jhenidah, a motorcyclist was killed in a road accident on Magura-Jhenidah highway at Madhupur Pachmail area on Saturday noon.
The deceased was identified as Sohan, 15, son of late Liton Mondol of Paschim Ramnagar village of the district.
In Sylhet, an elderly woman died after being slipped off a human-hauler while getting down from it at Roypur in Kanigahat upazila around 6pm on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Razia Begum, 55, wife of Jamsed Ali of Barochatul village of the upazila.
Locals rushed her to the Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
In Chandpur, hawker Saleh Ahmed, 40, son of Abdul Bashar Miaji of Tamta area in Shahrasti upazila, was killed after falling off a rickshaw when a private car hit it around 6:30 pm on Friday.
Police seized the car but its driver managed to flee the scene, said sub-inspector Kutubuddin of Shahrasti Police Station.
Also on Friday, two people were killed and 15 others got injured in a head-on collision between two buses on the nChattogram-Cox's Bazar road at Shahgodi Nimtal in Patia upazila on Friday.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspector of Patia Highway Police, said the accident took place in the area around 10:45 am, leaving the duo killed on the spot and 15 passengers injured.
On information, police rushed in and seized the vehicles.
