In order to produce diversified products for meeting local and global demands, the government is under process to upgrade the jute mills of the country with modern machines.
Under the initiative, the government is going to modernize all the jute mills of the country to increase production efficiency. Latest machinery is going to be installed to make mills capable of producing diversified products. At the initial stage, Textile and Jute Ministry will modify three jute mills which will be helpful to create fresh employment opportunities.
Recently, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECN-EC) has approved a project titled, 'Equalization, modernization, rehabilitation and enhancement of three mills under Bangladesh Jute Mill Corporation (BJMC) at an estimated cost of Tk 1.73 billion.
The government will allocate Tk 1.50 billion from its own fund and rest Tk 238 million will be collected from the development partners. Under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, BJMC is likely to implement the project by June 20 in 2020.
The three jute mills are: UMC Jute Mill Limited of Narsingdi, Jessore Jute Industries Limited of Noapara in Jessore and Galfra-Habib Limited of Sitakunda of Chittagong. Ministry sources said, the three jute mills had been built before 70 years. As a result, the mills have lost their production capacity to the lowest level.
Mirza Azam, State Minister for Textile and Jute, said the government wants to renovate and modernize country's all jute mills to increase production.
The modernization programme will enhance quality of products at lowest cost helping to increase foreign earnings and create new job opportunities. Also the products will be environmentally friendly, sources said.
