Home Minister Asaduzzman Khan Kamal on Wednesday urged all the countries to work together for safe maritime environment and development of blue economy in the South Asian countries.

The minister was inaugurating the two day-long 14th Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies Meeting (ACGAM) as the chief guest at a city hotel in Gulshan. "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman first claimed the maritime boundary, realizing the need for the establishment of the blue economy. At present, Bangladesh Coastguard's role in building blue economy is really commendable," he said.

"The force has been working with fame for preventing the miscreants, drugs, smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing in the sea," the minister said. The working level meeting is being conducted for two days under the arrangement of Bangladesh Coast Guard Force for  the first time.

Rear Admiral Aurangzeb Chowdhury, Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard Force was present as special guest and offered address of welcome.Commodore Meer Imamul Haque, Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard was also present at the function.

A total of 41 representatives from 18 Asian countries' coast guard maritime agencies are participating in the meeting.
The incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Southeast Asian waters rapidly increased in 1999, the HACGAM said adding that the regional conference on combating piracy and armed robbery against ships was held in Japan in 2000.

Subsequently, a meeting of regional experts of coast-guard agencies was held in Malaysia, in Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand on the same subjects.  Finally, under the Japan's initiative, inaugural session of Heads of Asian Coast Guard Agencies meeting (HACGAM) was held in Japan in 2004.

HACGAM is a high level multi-lateral forum and major Coast Guard Agencies of Asian Region. HACGAM aims at construction and development of capabilities in coast guard organizations for the whole region through working level discussion on overall maritime security and safety issues, having in mind working level discussion on overall maritime efforts by HACGAM member organizations are effective to promote safe and secure shipping in the region, as well as good relationships and mutual trust.

Since the inception, HACGAM has been held on a regular basis within a framework of voluntary engagement of each coast guard agency.
