A fire has broken out at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, halting immigration services for about half an hour at around 6pm on Sunday.
Seven units of firefighters rushed to the scene to douse the flames after smoke left passengers and officials in panic near the immigration office on the first floor of the Terminal No. 2, Shafiqul Islam, a senior officer at the Fire Service Uttara Station said.
"Smoke engulfed the entire immigration department at the airport. As a result, power supply was switched off. Immigration services were halted," immigration police OC Tasmin Ashraf said at 6:15pm.
Later, the situation became normal and the immigration services were restored at around 6:45pm, Abdullah Al Farooq, a Director of the Civil Aviation Authority, said.
According to Farooq, people became panicked after seeing smoke in the area reserved for passengers next to immigration. "No fire was traced. The smoke created the panic," he said, but could not say from where the smoke originated.
