New Zealand, Australia continue support to Rohingyas

Australia and New Zealand have said they are committed to working with Bangladesh to support those in need, particularly vulnerable women and girls, providing shelter for Rohingya people and support to the host community.

New Zealand has appreciated the government of Bangladesh for its ongoing efforts to support the Rohingya people who are living in Cox's Bazar.

The New Zealand has said it remains committed to playing its part to support those in need.

A delegation from the New Zealand High Commission, New Delhi, and the Australian High Commission, Dhaka visited Cox’s Bazar on September 4-5 to look at the humanitarian response to the Rohingya crisis.

The visit was part of a broader visit by the New Zealand High Commissioner Joanna Kempkers to Bangladesh from September 2-6, said the Australian High Commission in Dhaka on Sunday.

The joint Australia and New Zealand delegation, led by the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners, visited a UNFPA Women’s Friendly Space and UNHCR projects.

The delegation met Australian and New Zealand humanitarian experts working with a range of agencies in the camps and with the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner to learn how the Rohingya crisis is affecting the host community in Cox’s Bazar.

“New Zealand applauds the government of Bangladesh for its ongoing efforts to support Rohingya people,” said New Zealand High Commissioner Joanna Kempkers.

Australian High Commissioner Julia Niblett said a year on from the onset of the crisis, it is incredible to see how much work has been done to provide life-saving services for over 700,000 Rohingya in need.

"However, there is still more to be done, particularly in addressing gender-based violence and supporting women and girls. Australia remains committed to this going forward," she said.
