'Illiterate population need to be skilled human resources'

The International Literacy Day-2018 was celebrated in Rangpur on Saturday with the theme of 'Literacy and skills development' with a call to turn illiterate people into skilled and human resources for building a developed digital Bangladesh.

The district administration and District Non-Formal Education (NFE) Bureau chalked out programs, including bringing out of a colorful rally on the city streets followed by a discussion held at Town Hall auditorium in the city, reports BSS.

Acting Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ruhul Amin Mian led the rally participated by officials and executives of different government departments and NGOs, teachers, students, civil society members, professionals and elite of the city.

Later, the Acting Deputy Commissioner attended the post-rally discussion as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (Education and ICT) Abu Rafa Mohammad Arif in the chair.

Associate Professor of the Department of Bengali of Begum Rokeya University Dr Abu Saleh Muhammad Wadudur Rahman, District Education Officer Roksana Begum, District Primary Education Officer Tauhidul Islam and President of city Awami League Shafiur Rahman Shafi addressed as special guests.

Assistant Director of the District NFE Bureau Mosfikur Rahman delivered welcome speech narrating the government steps taken to provide literacy knowledge, informal education and training to illiterate population to turn them into skilled human resources.

Tauhidul Islam said the present government has achieved laudable success in raising the literary rate to 72.9 percent in the country following implementation of various programs on way to attain 100 percent literacy rate by 2030. Roksana Begum said achieving literacy knowledge is a prerequisite to turn illiterate population into skilled human resources by imparting necessary trainings to them for building a digital Bangladesh.

Dr Wadudur Rahman lauded the national education policy and put importance on its proper implementation to build an illiteracy-free country through spreading education among illiterate population to ensure national prosperity.

The chief guest said the government is implementing various programs to provide literacy knowledge and skill-building trainings to illiterate people to ensure their participation in the process of building a developed digital Bangladesh.
