No let-up in rape cases

Two minor girls, an elderly woman and a medical college student have been raped in separate incidents in Rajbari, Barishal, Khulna and Sirajganj districts while rape attempt has been made on another girl in Jashore. In Rajbari, a six-year-old girl was raped allegedly by one of her neighbors at Bhagalpur village in Gualanda upazila on Sunday.

Aker Fakir, 22, son of Ratan Fakir, seduced the child into going to his house in the name of watching television and violated her there, said the victim's father. 

When they went to Aker's house seeking redress, the youth and his family members threatened to kill them if they raise voice over the matter, he claimed. The victim was taken to Upazila Health Complex on Monday where doctors referred her to Rajbari Sadar Hospital. 

Inspector (Investigation) of Goalandaghat Police Station Md Aminul Islam said no complaint was lodged over the incident. In Barishal, a man and his son were arrested from Uttar Borakotha village of Wazirpur upazila on Monday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.

Officer-in-charge of Wazirpur Police Station said Ali Akbar Bepari, 60, picked up the girl on July 15 and took her to an abandoned building at Daberkul where he raped her. Later on September 2, his son Bellal Bepari, 35, also took the girl to a garden in the area and violated her.

On September 9, the girl narrated the incidents when asked by her mother after she fell sick. In Khunla, an elderly woman who used to live by begging has reportedly been raped by a drunken man, Md Ferdaus alias Sohagh Sheikh, 32, son of Khokon Sheikh, in Chhoto Khalpara area of Tutpara in the city.

On Sunday night, the victim and her husband were sleeping in their slum. Sohag entered the house around 3am on Monday and forced him into the woman. After hearing victim's screams, locals caught Sohagh and handed him over to police, said officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station.

In Sirajganj, police arrested a teacher of a medical college for reportedly raping a Nepalese student. Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Mohammad Daud said Dr Tuhin, a lecturer of North Bengal Medical College, had been in love affairs with the victim.

He raped the medical student with a promise to marry her, he said, adding that the girl filed a case against him when he refused to marry her. In Jashore, police arrested a sand trader-Golam Mostafa, son of Chand Ali -- as he allegedly tried to rape an 11-year-old child in Manirampur upazila on Tuesday.

The victim's mother said Mostafa took the girl to a toilet of a house in Manirampur Bazar and tried to rape her. After hearing victim's screams, her mother rushed in when Mostafa fled.
