The sudden death from a cardiac arrest of Ayub Bachchu is much more than the passing of a reputed artiste. It is a sudden brake put on the flow of good music. Or one could suggest that it is an unexpected end to transformative music, of the kind Ayub Bachchu popularised in his career.
He injected verve into melody and energy in the young, millions of whom have had his songs on their lips for decades. They are the people who will miss him. And there are also all those other music-loving people who will not forget the richness he brought to band music in the country, to a point where the genre has become synonymous with his name.
Ayub Bachchu's great quality was the youth which stayed in him even as he grew in age. His songs --- and he possessed this huge talent of combining in himself the roles of lyricist, singer and guitarist --- are a definition of the times, bringing into them the pathos and the cheer which together weave the pattern of post-modern life. His voice had a depth that drew people, even those not particularly drawn to his brand of music, to his songs.
As an individual, he was warm and spontaneous in his dealings with others. Hubris was no part of his character although he was a celebrity.
Ayub Bachchu, thank you for the music!
