The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has initiated a bold step to install the country's first ever smart pre-paid meter manufacturing factory in Khulna to meet local demand.
The state-owned West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCL) and Hexing Electrical Company Limited of China yesterday signed a joint venture agreement to set up the manufacturing unit under the name and style as Bangladesh Smart Electrical Company Limited.
According to the deal, WZPDCL and Hexing Electrical Company Limited will jointly install the factory under 51:49 ownership basis. Addressing the deal signing ceremony as chief guest, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid called upon other power related companies for taking such initiative to produce electrical materials.
"Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the power ministry has undertaken the initiative and signed a joint venture deal with Chinese Hexing Electrical Company Limited (HECL) for setting up the factory," he said. WZPDCL Secretary Abdul Motaleb and Hexing Electrical Company Ltd Chairman Zhou Liangzhang signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides at the city's Bidyut Bhaban.
Among others, Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, WZPDCL Chairman Maksuda Khatun, Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Engineer Khaled Mahmood, WZPDCL Managing Director Shafique Uddin and officials concerned attended the deal signing ceremony.
The WZPDCL managing director said the government is committed to transform the country into "Digital Bangladesh" within 2021, adding, "The main objective of the digital Bangladesh is to enhance the quality of service and make the government service available to the doorstep of every citizen."According to the contract detail, the factory will begin its production next year.
