Barrister Mainul Hosein, who faced widespread criticism after speaking in indecorous language with a woman journalist on a TV talk show and is the owner of the New Nation newspaper, was arrested Monday night following the filing of a number of defamation cases against him.
Police said Hosein, who served as an adviser to the military-backed caretaker government in 2007-2008, was picked up from Uttara residence of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab. He used abusive language against journalist Masuda Bhatti who edits the Bengali magazine "Ekpakkha."His arrest came hours after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told journalists that the law-enforcing agencies will look into the issue.
Since the incident a number of defamation cases were filed against him and police said he was arrested after a court in Rangpur issued a warrant against him.Hossein is one of the sponsors of the recently formed anti-government Jatiya Oikya Front alliance led by Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain.
Besides Rab's JSD, the BNP and the Nagorik Oikya of Mahmudur Rahman Manna are the other parties in the Front.
He had earlier Monday secured bails from the High Court in three cases against him, including one started by Bhatti, for his comments during the TV talk show on October 16.
