Asaduzzaman Miah, Commissioner, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has said that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) conducted the assault on policemen at Naya Paltan on Wednesday as part of a preplanned stratagem.
He added that BNP activists had plans to execute a much bigger subversive incident.Asaduzzaman Miah made these comments on Thursday noon at DMP Headquarters in the capital while talking to journalists at a press conference.
Asaduzzaman Miah said, "BNP unleashed this attack in a preplanned way. BNP aims to create anarchy in the country ahead of the forthcoming election. Police force lobbed tear shells and shot rubber bullets to defend themselves.
It seems that BNP had plans to do something much more hazardous than just assailing policemen." DMP Commissioner told reporters that so far 60 people have been arrested in connection with Wednesday's attack while 30 attackers have been identified. He asserted that those who assaulted policemen and burned police vehicles belong to BNP and its affiliated organizations.
It is clear from the video footages who attacked police personnel and committed violence, Asaduzzaman Miah stated. He told that Shahjalal Khandaker, member of Paltan thana Chhatra Dal set fire on police cars.
Asaduzzaman Miah informed that 23 members of police force including five officers were injured in the attack that occurred on Wednesday who are now undergoing medical treatment. They were wounded with sticks, bamboos and brickbats according to Asaduzzaman Miah.
Police handled the situation with high professionalism and patience to keep the electoral environment in good shape, Asaduzzaman Miah said.City Special Branch and Motijheel Crime Division have been assigned to investigate the incident, Asaduzzaman Miah said.
