The next five years

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be forming a new cabinet in a couple of days or so. This, in our view, is an opportunity for her to present the nation with a dynamic set-up where some members of the outgoing cabinet and some incoming new ones will be reflective of the image the government means to project for itself in the next five years.

We as citizens expect not only men and women with a clean image to be part of the council of ministers but also people who with their knowledge, expertise and worldview will be in a position to enhance Bangladesh's image abroad.

Every election is an opportunity for heads of government to undertake a broad review of administrations in the sense of the changes needed to inject new energy into governance. From that perspective, apart from the cabinet line-up, there should be positive moves taken in such areas as the nation's diplomacy given the difficult situations our diplomats have in the past been compelled to operate under abroad.

At important stations abroad, envoys at different levels, with abundant knowledge of history and the ways of the world, might be sent to speak for the country. The next five years ought to be a throbbing, thriving exercise of power by the government which will take over soon.
