Human chain formed to save botanical garden

Students of Barishal Govt Brojo Mohun (BM) College on Tuesday brought out an agitation rally and formed a human chain to protect botanical garden of the college campus. Students also protested the revival attempt of Lawn-Tennis Court at botanical garden premises of the college.

Samajtantrik Chhatra Front organized the rally and human chain. Sagor Das, SCF Secretary of BM College unit presided over the rally. Speakers said, the garden was situated at the science block of the campus for helping students of Soil Science and Botany department. Recently College authority started reconstruction of the abandoned Lawn Tennis court for the college teachers  by cutting  Shishu and  Mehegony tree and removing a structure of green house from there.

There  were 36 rare species  of trees and plants in the botanical garden,  but college authority destroyed some of those. 'We protesting that heinous activities of the college authority and demanded to stop any construction work at botanical garden area', Manisha Chakraborty, one of protesters said. 

Naturists late Dwijen Sharma when worked in this institution as a teacher, he rearranged this botanical garden of the College in 1950, she said. This botanical garden was created and  existed for helping the students of Soil Science and Botany Department of the College, Said Sultana Lily, one of the ex -students of the college.

Shafiqur Rahman, principal of the college, acknowledging the facts, said the work for reconstruction of the Lawn Tennis Court at cost of taka 4 lakhs continuing at the botanical garden premises , cutting only a Mehegony tree. Both the botanical garden and tennis court existed there since long days, so college authority decided to reconstruct the tennis court for members of college teachers association.
