Awami League's partners in Grand Alliance are not showing interest to become opposition parties in parliament. Grand Alliance won 288 seats in the eleventh parliamentary election. Awami League as an individual party won 257 seats. Jatiya Oikya Front and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won only eight seats. HM Ershad's Jatiya Party won 22 seats. Jatiya Party is supposed to be the opposition party this time while HM Ershad will be the chief of the opposition party.
The new cabinet does not have any member from Jatiya Party this time. There is no member from the Grand Alliance partners either in the cabinet.
Political sources have implied that Awami League is interested to put its Grand Alliance partners in the opposition party's seats in parliament. The parliament is going to resume from 30th January. Rashed Khan Menon, President, Workers Party told media, "We belong to the 14 parties Grand Alliance. We would like to stay there. We will play necessary roles to uphold democracy." Workers Party won three seats in the latest polls.
Rashed Khan Menon further said that his party is not eager to be in the opposition. Jatiya Party (JP) leader Sheikh Shahidul Islam has said that his party, which is led by Anwar Hossain Manju, will not be in the opposition either.
Hasanul Haq Inu, President, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, has also said that his party is not interested to be in the opposition in the new parliament. His party won two seats in the polls.
Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, Chairman, Tariqat Federation is also waiting for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's decision about joining or not joining the parliamentary opposition.
