Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) initiated night shift on every Thursday in October last which recharged the waste management services. The trial-based operation has been postponed as DSCC officials did their last night shift on January 3, which appears a drawback from appreciable move. Dhaka South Chief Executive Officer Mostafizur Rahman said the tryout brought significant change and the outputs were satisfactory.
"The shift has been deferred due to the chilling winter. We are mulling reintroduce it after the wintry weather," he noted. Before introducing the shift on October 4, DSCC said its office would remain open every Thursday from 11:00am to 5:00am. The mayor will be at his chamber supervising the ongoing development works. He would also listen to the locals.
A control room was also opened for the shift at the ground floor of the Nagar Bhaban. Mayor along with DSCC-high ups began the surveillance which drew huge appreciation from all around.
DSCC said they would make it permanent if they get satisfactory result. Even they would do the night shift on two days a week. General Secretary of Bangladesh Institute of Urban Planners Prof Adil Mohammad Khan observed traffic management and quality of civic facilities may enhance if Dhaka could adopt the shifting policy.
"Now it's the time. If the ATM booths remain open at night, why not some banks? Even the business houses can revise their office time. However, it would require additional security and safety measures," Khan noted cautiously.
