Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) has awarded the final license to Karnafuly Dry Dock Special Economic Zone Limited (KDDSEZL) at Anwara in Chattogram for shipbuilding and ship maintenance.
A license awarding ceremony organized by BEZA was held in this regard at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on Thursday. Once the economic zone goes into operation, it will fetch around $120 annually after meeting local demand, said a press statement.
Some $150 million will be invested in the KDDSEZL. The majority of the fund will come from World Bank. The dry-dock will have a capacity of one lakh DWT or Deadweight tonnage, according to the sources KDDSEZL. The economic zone will create employment opportunities for three thousand people, the sources added.
They have already completed work on road construction and electricity connection. Now jetty construction is going on and the work is expected to be completed by March this year, said KDDSEZL officials.

Among others, Executive Chairman of National Skills Development Authority of Prime Minister's Office Md Faruque Hossain, President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam, Executive Chairman of BEZA Paban Chowdhury, Managing Director of KDDSEZL Engineer MA Rashid was also present on the occasion.
