Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will begin drives in next week to scrutinize whether the old Dhaka factories are selling banned chemicals. Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon announced it yesterday at Nagar Bhaban while addressing a view exchange. The renewal of trade licenses will be scrutinized by a committee consisted of representatives from FBCCI, Department of Environment, city corporation and fire service within a week.
The committee will visit the factories and take action if any component among 20 banned chemicals is found in their possession. City corporation does not have any intention to hinder business, saying so, the mayor noted: "Safety of life and people must be prioritized." A devastating fire at old Dhaka chemical warehouses claimed 125 lives at Nimtoli in 2013.
Later the government decided to shift the factories to Kamrangirchar or Keraniganj. DSCC also conducted drives against those several times. "Executive magistrate will take action if any warehouse has flammable and hazardous component," said Khokon. DSCC chief executive officer Mostafizur Rahman and FBCCI president Shafiul Islam Mahiuddin were also present at the talk.
