ASK protests Shyamoli slum eviction

Human rights organization Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) has protested eviction drive by Ministry of Housing and Public Works at Shyamoli slum without rehabilitation and violating the directive of the High Court (HC). The organization in a written statement yesterday said the slum has a stay order. Despite of it, the ministry-led eviction drive has displaced several thousands of marginalized people.

The drive began yesterday morning instructing the dwellers to move away with their valuables. According to the authorities, the slum dwellers were served with prior notice. However, the evicted people told the ASK representative at the spot that they did not have such any notice. The media release said the magistrate's attention was drawn about the stay order. The official said he was not aware of it and continued the drive as per the order of higher authorities.

"Such eviction drives without any rehabilitation is sheer violation of constitutional rights and court order," ASK said demanding cancelation of the eviction and compensation to the evicted people.
