Bangladesh Navy emerged champions securing four gold, three silver and five bronze medals in the Third Independence Cup Fencing Championship that concluded at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.
The event was organized by the Bangladesh Fencing Association (BFA).In the battle of EP Men's event, Bangladesh Navy Fencing Club clinched the title in a dominating fashion while Ansar bagged four gold, two silver and four bronze medals to finish runners-up.
Meanwhile, in Saver Women's event, Navy bagged four gold, one silver and two bronze medals to become champion. Ansar grabbed two gold, one silver and two bronze medals to finish runners-up. The four-day meet began on March 10 in the evening where Dr A K Azad Chowdhury, Former VC, University of Dhaka and ex-Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, inaugurated the championship as the chief guest.
President of Bangladesh Fencing Association, M Shoeb Chowdhury alongside Chairperson of the Chattogram Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB) Naba Bikram Kisore Tripura, Member (Law) IDRA Borhan Uddin, Managing Director of Agrani Bank Ltd Mohammad Shams-Ul Islam, Managing Director of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd Md Mahbub-ul-Alam, Managing Director of Popular Life Insurance Company B M Yusuf Ali were also present as special guests.
Army, Navy, Ansar & VDP, Border Guard Bangladesh, Chattogram Fencing Club, Mirpur Fencing Club, Mymensingh Fencing Club, Quantum School and College, Begum Rokeya University Fencing Club and Mohamoni Fencing Club took part in the four-day tournament.Fencing is one of the oldest sports in the Olympic Games. This game is gradually becoming popular in Bangladesh at the efforts of Bangladesh Fencing Association.
