The closing ceremony of third Independence Cup Fencing Championship was held yesterday at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Dhaka.

Bangladesh Navy won the champions title in the tournament while Bangladesh Ansar and VDP became runners up.Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque attended the closing ceremony as chief guest. Bangladesh Bank's former Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman, Lt. General Mainul Islam (Retd), President, Bangladesh Archery Federation, Professor Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Vice Chancellor, Begum Rokeya University, Brigadier General ASM Ridwanur Rahman, Director, Military Training and Commodore M. Musa, Chairman, Bangladesh Navy Sports Control Board were present as special guests.Major Qamrul Islam (Retd), Secretary General of Bangladesh Fencing Association (BFA) gave the welcome speech of the program.

He said that BFA made tremendous progress during last two years under the dynamic leadership of BFA President Shoeb Chowdhury.Fencing coach Sello Maduma said that he joined BFA as a coach in March 2018 and he is impressed with the skills the fencers have acquired during last one year.

Shoeb Chowdhury, President, Bangladesh Fencing Association, thanked all guests and participants of the tournament. He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lays much emphasis on sports. Bangladeshi fencers would be able to bring glory for the country from overseas competitions in near future, he expressed hope.

Shoeb Chowdhury further said that indoor games need to be properly expanded among the youths besides other sports like football and cricket. He urged the NGOs to come up with initiatives to boost sports in the country. Shoeb Chowdhury quoted from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman saying, "Nobody can hold us down."

Dr. Atiur Rahman called upon the corporate organizations to cooperate with sports platforms to promote indoor and outdoor games under corporate social responsibility. Sports are essential to build up a healthy and resourceful nation, he added. Dr. Atiur Rahman also said that Bangladesh would not have been created if Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not born. He adulated BFA for holding Independence Cup Fencing tournament  in the historic month of March.

Chief guest AKM Mozammel Haque congratulated all the participants of the tournament. He admired the officials of Bangladesh Fencing Association for successfully hosting the competition. He said that all educational institutions should inspire their pupils to take part in sports and other extracurricular activities. AKM Mozammel Haque stated that Bangabandhu had a dream of glorifying Bangladesh in all sectors including sports.Later on the chief guest and special guests distributed prizes among the fencing players.
