The High Court on Wednesday ordered Suprovat Paribahan to pay Tk 10 lakh to the family of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury who was killed in a road accident in the capital on Tuesday.
An HC bench comprising of Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K. M. Hafizul Alam passed the order after hearing on a writ filed by Supreme Court lawyer barrister Nazrul Islam Talukder.
It also asked why the continuing failure of the authorities to ensure the safety of commuters on the streets should not be declared illegal and why the family of Abrar should not be awarded Tk 50 million in damages.
Secretaries to the Home Ministry, Ministry of Road, Transport and Bridges, Inspector General of police, Suprovat Paribahan authority and four others have asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
Besides, it asked the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Accident Research Institute (ARI) of BUET and additional traffic commissioner of Dhaka to submit a probe report within 15 days.
Abrar, son of Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury, died after being run over by a 'Suprovat Paribahan' bus in front of the Bashundhara gate around 7:15 am on Tuesday. It was later learned that the driver was driving the bus with the license of light vehicles and was competing with another bus on the road.
