Probe body formed over Mall Chattar mayhem


A three-member probe committee was formed yesterday to look into an incident on early Saturday where several stalls made to celebrate Pahela Baishakh at Dhaka University (DU) were vandalized and set on fire.Assistant proctor of the university Dr Mohammad Mainul Karim has been made the head of the body with two of his colleagues.

DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, "The committee have to submit the report as soon as possible." Earlier on Saturday around 1:00 am, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists have allegedly set ablaze, and vandalized several stalls. Chhatra League's internal feud allegedly disrupts the celebration. According to witnesses, the activists set fire to several stalls, concert stage, and vandalized promotional placards and banners sponsored by Mojo and Frutika.

On Saturday, the authorities have cancelled the permission of the concert due to unavoidable circumstances. At least 13 refrigerators had been vandalized. Overall, a loss of around TK1 crore had incurred in that incident, claimed Azam Bin Tarek, head of operation and brand marketing of Akij Food and Beverage Limited.
