Huge traffic jams have been experienced recently in the capital city Dhaka, especially from Uttara to Narayanganj and Kanchpur bridge to Gabtoli. City dwellers faced immense sufferings yesterday all day as the weather was steamy, roads were jammed with vehicles and bus stoppages were teeming with commuters.
Common people used to going to their workplaces at about 8 in the morning hardly found any vehicle from Abdullahpur to Gulistan or Motijheel. Large numbers of commuters, finding no alternative, began a long walk to their destinations on a day of intense heat.
Such crucial points of the city as Abdullahpur, Azampur, Airport, Khilkhet, Bishwa Road, Banani, Mohakhali, Farmgate, Karwan Bazaar, Shahbagh, Press Club, Gulistan, Bangladesh Bank Square, Sayeedabad, Jatrabari, Gabtoli, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Asadgate, Kalabagan, New Market, Mirpur, Mirpur Section 10 intersection, Kazipara, Agargaon, Notun Bazar, Badda Link Road, Rampura, Hajipara, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Gulistan, Sadarghat, Mohakhali, Shaat Rastar Mor, and Moghbazar were crowded with commuters as only a few buses were seen plying on the routes.
Traffic police have been monitoring the movements of buses operating on the routes. They have been examining the fitness certificates and other documents of the buses. For these reasons most bus drivers and owners kept their vehicles off the roads. As a result, road traffic jams in the city in the Ramadan season have been acute. Additionally, on-going work on the construction of the metro rail route in the city, especially in Uttara,
Mirpur, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Press Club and Motijheel has narrowed the roads in these areas, resulting in long tailbacks.
