Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution or BSTI has cancelled licenses of seven food companies that featured on a list of 52 products identified as substandard. It has also suspended permission for production of 18 other brands, according to a media release issued on Wednesday.
The seven companies that lost licenses are: Mineral water: Al Shafi, Shahari And Brothers (Narjan Drinking Water), Morn Dew Pure Drinking Water, RR Dew Drinking Water, Soft drink: Shanta Food Products of Keraniganj (Tasty, Tani and Taskia), Zahangir Food Products of Kamrangirchar (Priya Soft Drink Powder), Ghee: Bonolota Sweets and Bakery of Mirpur.
The BSTI suspended production of: Mustard oil: Teer (City Oil Mill of Gazipur), GB (Green Blessings Oil of Narayanganj), Pusti (Shabnam Vegetable Oil of Narayanganj), Rupchanda (Bangladesh Edible Oil of Narayanganj), Mineral water: ARRA (ARRA Food and Beverage), Duncan (Duncan Products), Dighi (Dighi Drinking Water), Vermicelli: Pran Lachcha Vermicelli (Pran Agro Limited), Powdered turmeric: Danish, Pran, Fresh, Curry powder: Pran, Danish, Salt: ACI, Molla, Powdered coriander: ACI Pure, Noodles: Doodles of New Zealand Dairy, Chips: Sun (Quasem Food)
The BSTI asked the producers of these 18 items to recall these from the market, stop production, marketing and retail sale until licences of these products are cleared after improvement of standard. Storing and commercial advertisement of these products have also been prohibited, reports bdnews24.com. BSTI on May 13 said it had identified 52 substandard food products under 52 brands of 18 companies.
It had served the firms with notices to explain the standard of their products. The institution had covertly collected 406 samples of 27 types of products which are commonly used in preparing food items for Sahri and Iftar.
Its Deputy Director for Certification Marks Riazul Haque told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that the licenses were cancelled or suspended as the firms did not respond within the stipulated time.
The High Court has already banned the 52 products barring the production of the impugned items until the BSTI standards are met and ordered that the products be removed from stores and destroyed immediately.
