Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has expressed his optimism that unity in the Oikya Front will sustain.
He came up with the optimism at a joint meeting of the Awami League and its associate bodies at party's Bangabandhu Avenue Central Office in the city yesterday.Quader said, "We want Oikya Front's unity to sustain. A strong and responsible opposition party is essential for democracy."
Urging the Jatiya Oikya Front to play a strong and responsible role in and outside parliament, Quader said, the ruling party does not want to see disunity in Oikya Front. The Sheikh Hasina's government and the Awami League want a strong and responsible opposition party in the country, he added. He further said, the government did not feel any international pressure for the release of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia though BNP always lobbies with the international community for the release of its convicted leader.
Responding to the remarks of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir over the treatment of Khaleda Zia, Quader said although doctors do not have any concern about her health, BNP is now trying to do politics over the issue.
AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam, Dhaka South Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokan, AL organising secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim, BM Mozammel Haque, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, president of AL Dhaka city north unit Abul Hasnat and its general secretary Shahe Alam Murad were, among others, present at the meeting.
