Ruling Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman said he is very much ashamed as he has failed to stop extortion in his constituency.
He said, "Terrorists are taking a toll by occupying the road. For this works of many projects have been stopped. But as a lawmaker, I don't anything to do in this regard. For this, I am very much ashamed."Shamim Osman said this in the Parliament rising on a point of order on Sunday.
He said, "The government is building a quarter for officials at a cost of TK 700 crore. It has been tendered about 4.5 years ago. I had requested former public works minister to keep space a playground on the same land. The Cabinet has granted my request and has already approved TK 12 crore."
Shamim also said BIWTA built a walkway there during the period of former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan. But a group of terrorists and extortionists has vandalized it, which is very costly. They (extortionists) are doing loading and unloading of goods and taking extortion. Contractor of the project can't do the work for three years due to terrorist activities. Raising a question he said how long are the hand of the terrorists and extortionists?
They take TK 4-5 lakh toll daily using the names of workers. They have no party. The company which got the contract can't do the work. A general diary was filed and Shipping Ministry filed a case but nothing worked. Where is the source of their power? "As a lawmaker of the constituency, I don't have anything to do in this regard. I am very much ashamed." Shamim hoped that public works minister would take action in this regard.
