A group of 20-30 miscreants smuggling cattle from India allegedly attacked the Border Security Force (BSF) search-cum-patrolling team along the Chapainawabganj border in the early hours of Monday.

"The smugglers paid no heed to the warning of BSF personnel and aggressively attacked them with sharp lethal weapons near Border Pillar N. 178," said a statement of the force received in Dhaka. It said the BSF personnel fired two rounds of non-lethal pump action gun in self-defense.

Instead of being dispersed, the smugglers became more aggressive and intensified their attack on the patrolling team, it added. "Sensing imminent danger to their lives, the BSF personnel fired two rounds of personal weapon to disperse the smugglers," the statement said.

The miscreants fled to Bangladesh by taking advantage of darkness and bad weather conditions on the international border, it said.Meanwhile, the other members of patrolling party reached the spot. On searching the area, one smuggler was found dead and one BSF constable Ziaul Haque was grievously injured on his left arm and on the back of his head.
