Students of Dhaka University (DU) formed a human chain at their campus yesterday protesting the recent spate of rape incidents and demanded capital punishment to rapists.
Over five hundred students mostly female took part in the human chain program organized under the banner of 'General Students of Dhaka University' at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture of DU in the morning. Leaders of hall unions also joined the protest.
The demonstrating students showed different placards' and posters with writings 'We want capital punishment to rapists', 'No punishment to rapists without hanging' etc.
Falguni Das Tonni, assistant secretary of Rokeya hall union, said, at least an incident of rape occurs every day, which isn't tolerable and acceptable in a civilized state. So we want death penalty to the perpetrators.
"Law enforcers often nab the rapist but justice isn't ensured. So we want the rapists to given death sentence through a special tribunal within 30 working days" said Shamsunahar hall union general secretary Ziasmin Shanta. Expressing solidarity with the protesting students, environment scientist Dr Kanij Aklima Sultana said, "If the government takes stern action against rapists, it will be brought under control."
They also announced to submit memorandums to the President, Prime Minister and chief justice on Thursday.
