8,848 Bangladeshis in foreign jails


Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has said that total 8848 Bangladeshi nationals are at present in jails in foreign countries according to a calculation up to 30th June 2019.

Dr. AK Abdul Momen provided this information on Thursday in Parliament while answering a question. He further said that Foreign Ministry has been working with the cooperation of Bangladeshi embassies and high commissions in different countries to get the imprisoned Bangladeshis released and to bring them back to Bangladesh.

Many Bangladeshi nationals who were stranded in Indonesia, Tunisia and Libya in recent times have been brought back to Bangladesh. Dr. AK Abdul Momen informed that Bangladeshi citizens are jailed in 44 countries.

The highest number of Bangladeshis are imprisoned in India. 2049 Bangladeshi people are currently in Indian jails. The rest of the Bangladeshis are inside the jails of United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait and Turkey.

It may be added that a lot of Bangladeshi people migrate to foreign countries through human traffickers while some Bangladeshis seek political asylum after reaching foreign destinations.
