Researcher Nazrul Islam Bashir, who has written a book on Bangabandhu and Bangladesh Bank, demands to declare July 16 as the 'National Banking Day' in honor of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Nazrul Islam Bashir said, "July 16 is a memorable day in the history of country's banking sector. On this day in 1973, Bangladesh Bank published a revolutionary and visionary message of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on reconstructed and rejuvenated banking sector."
The message has now been preserved at the Bangabandhu Corner of Agrani Bank Limited head office in the city. In the message, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman mentioned, "Modern banking system is essential in any effort for stride of developing countries. A healthy and strong banking system reflects dynamic economy of any country.
The banks of the country, nay, the whole economy was left in a deplorable condition by the Pakistani occupation army before its surrender. These institutions, by overcoming countless obstacles and hindrances, have once again picked up their own pace; the currency and monetary system having been rejuvenated with a new vitality. It is no doubt a good augury.
Our main objective is to build up a self-sustaining economy which will draw its strength from indigenous resources. To-day, we must participate actively in the task of national reconstruction so that we are able to bring about a self-reliant economy and an effective and developed banking system."
