A suspected drug trader was killed in what was described as a 'gunfight' with police at Hoaikong Nayapara in Teknaf upazila on early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Mufidul Alam alias Mongaiya, 42, son of Najir Ahmed of Nayapara in the upazila.Police arrested Mufidul Alam as he was wanted in different cases including drug-related cases, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station.
Later, police along with Mufidul went to the Nayapra area to recover arms and Yaba at around 5 am. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Mufidul's associates fired gunshots targeting police, forcing them to fire back and triggering a 'gunfight'. At one stage, Mufidul was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. Later, he was taken to local hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Three policemen were injured in the incident.Two firearms, ten cartridges and five thousand Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
