The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday filed a case against suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mizanur Rahman and ACC director Enamul Basir on bribery charges.
Sheikh Mohammad Fanafillah, ACC director and also the leader of the investigation team, lodged the case with Dhaka-1 coordinated district office under the ACC, its public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed it to journalists.
According to ACC officials, Mizanur in a television interview claimed that ACC official Basir took Tk 4 million in bribes from him, promising that he would be given a clean chit. Basir also divulged probe details during the investigation. Earlier, the anti graft body gave its approval to file case against former DIG Mizanur and Enamul Basir over the bribe scam.
Audio clips of mobile conversations between DIG Mizanur and Basir were also aired on television. Basir refuted the allegations and said that the DIG had supplied a forged clip to a television channel, using an imitation of his voice.
Later he was removed from his office and replaced by another ACC director, Md Monzur Morshed, after the allegations surfaced and the ACC formed a three-member team, led by Fanafilla, to probe the bribery allegations.
During the investigation, the ACC team sent the audio clips of mobile conversations between Mizan and Basir to the authorities concerned for forensic test and found their involvement in exchange of bribes.
DIG Mizanuar was an additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He was withdrawn on January 9 last year following the allegation of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel.
He had also reportedly married a woman forcibly and tortured her. Mizan allegedly picked the 25-year-old woman up in July, 2017 and then forcibly married her. He had also implicated her in a false case whereby she was arrested and remained in jail for three weeks.
