Govt pursuing energy security

The government is going ahead with a plan to set up sustainable energy security with a view to moving the country forward and build a developed nation by 2041.

The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to meeting a long-lasting energy security of the people for prosperity and happiness. Energy and Mineral Resources State Minister Nasrul Hamid Bipu yesterday came up with these remarks when he was addressing a press brief regarding the government's strategic options on the occasion of National Energy Security Day being observed today.

The government is determined to give the highest importance to fuel and energy saving through effective use of valuable natural resources, together with preventing energy wastage. The government is observing this day as 'National Energy Security  Day' since 2010, following the path of development pursued by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the state minister said.

The state minister said the government at present produces 2750 mmcfd gas per day, but the country needs the demand of 3700 million mmcfd. In order to meet the growing demand, 'we are trying import LNG and LPG. The use of LPG is increasing geometrically and soon we will need 30 lakh metric ton LPG per year. The government approved companies at the first phase will be capable to meet around the capacity of 30 lakh metric ton.

The state minister said the dream of the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman realized the importance of nation energy security. He initiated to nationalization of 5 gas fields-Titas, Bakhrabad, Habiganj, Rashidpur and Kailashtila. To accelerate the effort, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina introduced National Energy Security Day in 2010.
