BNP senior joint general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that the statement of state minister for rural development and cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharya about the link between economic development and outbreak of dengue is 'the shock of the century'. He came up with the remark while addressing a press conference at BNP's Nayapaltan central office in the city yesterday.
Rizvi said, "People of the country as well as me are confused what we will term the minister's statement 'the talk of the century' or 'shock of the century." "There is an outbreak of stupid ministers like Aedes mosquitoes. They are talking in a foolish manner. Country's people would benefit if they know from where the local government state minister has collected the information." At a program in Gopalganj on Thursday, Swapan Bhattacharya said that the outbreak of dengue took place due to widespread development in Bangladesh.
He further said that Aedes mosquito is an elite insect and that dengue has affected people in Singapore and Thailand too. Slamming the government for its failure to save people from the outbreak of dengue, Rizvi said, "They (ministers and government officials) are doing photo sessions in the name of killing mosquitoes."
The senior BNP leader demanded immediate release of imprisoned party chairperson Khaleda Zia who is now undergoing treatment at the BSMMU. BNP vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain, joint general secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon and assistant organizing secretary Abdus Salam Azad also spoke at the press conference.
