Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has said it is closely observing the Kashmir situation with 'concern and disquietude' following India's removal of the special status for the state.
The party made clear its position on the Kashmir issue in a media statement issued on Tuesday night by its joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. The statement said, "The people of Bangladesh always desire peace and security because of the common history of this sub-continent."
It said the party expects a quick return of the sense of security and peace among the political leadership of Jammu and Kashmir and the people there. BNP described as 'timely' the call the United Nations made to all relevant parties for showing restraint, and termed 'realistic' the proposal it put forward for solution to the problem through discussions among the sides involved.
The statement further said, "BNP believes that the parties involved can solve any problem through talks. It also believes that the Indian government will solve the ongoing problem by ensuring the basic rights of all citizens enshrined in the Indian constitution." It said solution to the Kashmir issue will accelerate the process to maintain peace, harmony, development and security in the region.
