Nation in mourning

The nation is observing the National Mourning Day today, marking the 44th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members.

A group of disgruntled army officers assassinated country's undaunted leader Bangabandhu along with most of his family members and toppled his three and half-year-old government at the fateful dawn of August 15, 1975,The self-confessed killers not only assassinated Bangabandhu, the greatest son of the soil in thousand years, but also killed 16 other members of his family and relatives.

They include Bangabandhu's wife Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel, daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal, brother Sheikh Naser, brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat, nephew Sheikh Fazlul Huq Moni, and his pregnant wife Arzoo Moni.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of Bangabandhu, and her sister Sheikh Rehana escaped the assassination as they were staying overseas then.

The murder of Bangabandhu and most of his family descended a pall of gloom and spread a sense of deep sadness among the people in the country and across the globe. Though the nation is in mourning since the beginning of the month of August, the formal observance of the day will take place today, recalling the most brutal killing in its history and renewing the pledge to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.

Like previous years, the government, ruling Awami League and different political and socio-cultural organizations, educational institutions and professional bodies chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day with due respect and solemnity.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day.The government has planned elaborate programs to observe the day. As part of the program, the national flag will fly half-mast atop the offices of all government, semi-government and autonomous bodies and educational institutions on the day.

In the morning, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will place wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation at Bangabandhu Museum in the capital city at 6:30 am. A special Munajat and Fateha also will be offered there.

The prime minister will later place wreaths and offer Fateha at the Banani graveyard for the family members of Bangabandhu and others, who embraced martyrdom with him on August 15, 1975.

Sheikh Hasina will then fly to Tungipara in Gopalganj and place wreath at the Mazar of Bangabandhu there, where Fateha will be offered and a special Milad Mahfil and Dua will be held.

People from all walks of life will throng the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the capital to pay their profound homage to the Father of the Nation by placing wreaths at his portrait.

In line with the government program, different ministries and departments, directorates and agencies will organize various programs. Bangladesh missions abroad, city corporations, district councils, municipalities and union councils will also organize programs to observe the day.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, private TV channels and radio stations will air special programs in observance of the National Mourning Day. National and regional newspapers will publish special supplements on the occasion.

Ruling Awami League has chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day. As part of the programs, the national and party flags will be hoisted half-mast atop the Awami League offices and Bangabandhu Bhaban on the day.In the morning, the party leaders will place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Museum in the capital.

The leaders will then place wreaths and offer Fateha at the Banani graveyard for the family members of the Father of the Nation and others.

A delegation of the Awami League leaders, including Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Kazi Zafar Ullah, Muhammad Faruk Khan, Abul Hasnat Abdullha, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, Faridunnahar Laily, and Advocate Afzal Hossain, will join the programs in Tungipara on August 15.

The programs include placing of wreaths at the Mazar of Bangabandhu and offering Fateha there. The ruling party leaders will distribute food among the poor, distressed and orphans in the afternoon.

Mohila Awami League will arrange a Milad and Dua Mahfil in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban after Asr prayers.District and upazila administration will observe the day through Dua Mahfil and discussions in line with the national programs.

Different socio-cultural organizations and people from all walks of life will place wreaths at Tungipara and at the portrait of Bangabandhu in Dhanmondi.
