Local vessels to be able to carry more cargos; Bill placed
The Bangladesh Flag Vessel (Protection) Act, 2019 was placed in Parliament on Wednesday with a provision for local vessels to carry 50 percent cargos from the existing 40 percent.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury placed the Bill and it was sent to the respective Parliamentary standing Committee for further scrutiny.

The committee was asked to submit its report within 10 days.

Three changes have been made in The Bangladesh Flag Vessel (Protection) Act, 2019 with provisions for the vessels to carry 50 percent cargos from the existing 40 percent; fixing 30 days for making an appeal by an aggrieved person and Tk 5 lakh as the highest administrative punishment in case of floating the law.

The vessels registered with Bangladesh are called Bangladesh flag vessels.

The ‘Bangladesh Flag Vessels (Protection) Ordinance 1982’ was promulgated on June 28, 1982 and some changes were brought to it following a Supreme Court order.

The government has turned the 1982 ordinance into an act following the Supreme Court order.
