Reacting to the statements made by several ministers of the Indian state of Assam on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said a deep-rooted conspiracy is being hatched to put Bangladesh at stake.

He came with the statement while addressing a human-chain program organized in front of the National Press Club in the city on Wednesday demanding the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

"Our next-door neighbor India is a friend of Bangladesh. But threats are being issued from Indian state Assam to send back people who have been dropped from the NRC. I want to state clearly that no Bangladeshi went to India after the Liberation War," Mirza Fakhrul. Criticizing the current foreign policy, the BNP secretary general said, "The incumbent government has no courage. The Rohingya crisis can't be resolved due to the subservient foreign policy of the government."

About the health condition of Khaleda Zia, he said, "Our chairperson is seriously ill. She can't move on her own. But the government and the hospital authorities are saying that she is well. We demand her immediate release for proper treatment." Terming the present government 'illegal', the senior BNP leader said, Khaleda Zia has been kept in prison illegally. All state institutions have been destroyed, he added.

Mirza Fakhrul urged people from all walks of life to get united for establishing their rights. BNP standing committee members Barrister  Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan, Vice-chairman AZM Zahid Hossain, Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Mohila Dal President Afroza Abbas and Dhaka south city BNP President Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel also addressed the program among others.
