Three more arrested over Abrar killing

Detectives arrested three more students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) from the capital and Ashulia on its outskirts on Tuesday over the murder of Abrar Fahad.

The arrestees are Shamsul Arefin Rafat, 21, Moniruzzaman Monir, 21, and Md Akash Hossain, 21.

With this, the number of arrested suspects in the Abrar killing case has risen to 13.

Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masudur Rahman said the Detective Branch of police arrested the trio conducting separate drives.

Rafat was picked up from Jigatala in the capital around 3:30pm while Monir from Demra around 6pm and Akash from Baipail of Ashulia around 6pm, he said.

Rafat is a 2nd year student of Mechanical Engineer department while Monir a 3rd year student of Water Resources Engineering department and Akash is a 3rd year student of Civil Engineering department.

On Monday, law enforcers arrested 10 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League over the Abrar’s murder.

They are BCL Buet unit general secretary Mehedi Hasan Russel, its vice-president Muhtasim Fuad, organising secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin, information and research secretary Anik Sarkar, sports secretary Meftahul Islam, literature secretary Moniruzzaman Monir, deputy social welfare secretary Efti Mosharraf Sokal, deputy office secretary Mostoba Rafid and two members Muntasir Al Jami and Ehtemamul Rabbi.

They were put on a five-day remand by a court here on Tuesday over the murder.

Abrar’s father Barkatullah filed a case with Chawkbazar Police station on Monday evening accusing 19 people, including earlier arrested 10 BCL leaders and activists.

The case was transferred to the DB on Tuesday for investigation.

Abrar, 21, a student Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was found dead on the staircase of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university early Monday.

Some BCL leaders beat him at room-2011 of the dormitory on Sunday night suspecting his link to Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.

On Monday, BCL expelled 11 leaders and activists of its Buet unit for their involvement in the murder of Abrar Fahad.
