Information Minister Hasan Mahmud has claimed that Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal are active in the agitation of BUET students, who are protesting the murder of their fellow student Abrar Fahad.
"Today we observe that a certain quarter, especially BNP and its alliance which can benefit from any unrest in the country, have plotted to keep the students agitated and included their agents to further incite the students," he said.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, he referred to the agitating students' decision to continue with the protests in BUET even after the authorities agreed to their demands, to substantiate his claim.
Islami Chhatra Shibir is the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami while Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal is the student front of Bangladesh National Party (BNP).
Hasan Mahmud said prompt, unprecedented measures have been taken following the murder of Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering of BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology).
"We've noticed that the Chhatra Dal and Shibir members became active in the movement using fake names. They intruded as general students and tried to change the course of the issue," he added.
The information minister urged the students to keep vigil so that no one can advance their political interest taking advantage of this incident.
Abrar was beaten to death by the leaders and activists of the BUET unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student front of the ruling Awami League, on Oct 6, triggering student agitation.
BUET Vice Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam had a discussion with the agitating students on Friday and assured them of meeting their 10-point charter of demands including a ban on political activities on the campus and permanent expulsion of the murder suspects.
The students, however, said they would carry on their demonstrations until all their demands were implemented. They decided to relax the protest on Oct 13 and 14 to allow admission tests.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has questioned the motive of continued protests after the authorities accepted the protesters' demands. The information minister called the murder of Abrar a "heinous and gruesome incident".
