Shoeb Chowdhury, Chairman of the Editorial Board of The Asian Age, on Monday congratulated the eminent economist Abhijit Banerjee on being awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for 2019.
Speaking to the Nobel laureate over telephone, Chowdhury eulogized Banerjee's contributions in the field of poverty alleviation.
He said the people of Bangladesh were delighted at his achievements in the field, now crowned by his success in getting the Nobel Prize. Shoeb Chowdhury made special note of the fact that Banerjee is a Bengali who has instilled a huge sense of pride among Bengalis in both Bangladesh and West Bengal.
It may be noted that Abhijit Binayak Banerjee, an Indian-American economist of Bengali descent, is Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In his response to Shoeb Chowdhury's felicitations, the Nobel laureate said: "I am touched by your greetings and will talk to you and The Asian Age in detail."Along with Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo was also awarded the Nobel in the same category.
