Taposh demands ACC chief's exit Fazle Noor Taposh

Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh has said that Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood should step down over not taking proper measures against Abdul Hai Bachchu, former Chairman of Basic Bank.

Fazle Noor Taposh made this remark on Monday while speaking to journalists. He said, "ACC Chairman should resign from his post due to his failure to take required actions against Abdul Hai Bachchu."

It may be recalled that Abdul Hai Bachchu disbursed 3 thousand 493 crore 43 lakh taka as loans to different clients in undue ways from April 2012 to March 2013. It has been one of the biggest loan rackets in Bangladesh's history.

Anti-Corruption Commission lodged 56 cases in 2015 against 156 people in connection with the loan scams of Basic Bank. 27 officials of Basic Bank, 11 surveyors and 81 loan recipients were accused in these cases.

It may be added that enormous corruption and irregularities have been going on in the country's banking and financial sectors for last few years. The amount of defaulted loans has reached nearly 2 trillion taka in the meantime.

Economists, financial experts and prominent citizens have urged the regulatory authorities and the government to carry out strong initiatives to recover defaulted loans and to prosecute loan scammers without delay.
