Vietnam to play positive role over Rohingya issue

Vietnam wants to play a positive role as the next chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) for a “safe, secured and dignified” repatriation of Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine State.

Outgoing Ambassador of Vietnam to Bangladesh Tran Van Khoa conveyed it to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen during a farewell meeting at the latter’s office here on Monday.

Vietnam is likely to take over as the Asean chair from January 2020. Thailand is the current Asean chair.The Ambassador also assured Bangladesh Foreign Minister of conveying to the headquarters Bangladesh’s concerns over the Rohingya issue as Dr Momen sought Vietnam’s support within Asean framework, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Foreign Minister congratulated the Ambassador on successful completion of his assignment in Dhaka.

He said Bangladesh attaches utmost importance to its bilateral ties with Vietnam and the two countries are close partners in multiple areas.The Foreign Minister urged Vietnam to invest in economic zones and hi-tech parks of Bangladesh as it offers the most attractive investment package among the competing regional countries.

He said Bangladeshi youths are extremely skilled and fast learners and mentioned that bilateral trade can expand if non-tariff barriers are removed.

Ambassador Khoa thanked the Foreign Minister for the support he received during his assignment in Dhaka.
