Individual depositors of People's Leasing and Financial Services (PLSF) have urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to help recover their hard-earned money from People's Leasing and Financial Service Ltd, which is facing liquidation due to massive irregularities by its directors.

They came up with the call at a press conference arranged by FLSF Individual Depositors Council, a platform of cheated depositors of the PLSF, at a city hotel on Friday.

The depositors said they are passing their days in uncertainty and concern as they are not seeing any hope of getting back their money from the non-bank financial institution.

Mohammad Atiqur Rahman Atique, chief coordinator of the platform, read out a written statement at the press conference on behalf of some 6000 depositors.

Council convener Md Anowarul Haque, member secretary Prashanta Kumar Das, joint conveners Rana Ghosh, Kamar Ahmed, Samia Binte Mahbub and Abu Naser Bokhtiar were present while eminent singer Dr Nashid Kamal conducted the press conference.

In the written statement, Atique said, "Over one lakh family members of 6,000 depositors of People's Leasing are leading an uncertain life. The PLFS fell in financial crisis due to the looting of the directors of the company and massive irregularities. The depositors haven't got back their money."

Blaming lax monitoring of the central bank, he further said, "An unscrupulous quarter has made us distressed due to lack of proper monitoring of the Bangladesh Bank (BB)."

"They have taken away our money. But the BB is pushing thousands of depositors to uncertainty by giving order to liquidate the company. The image of the government is being tarnished due to the mysterious role of the central bank."

Stressing the need for Prime Minister's move to restore discipline in the banking sector and financial sector, Atique said, "If the government takes an initiative to restructure People's Leasing like Farmers' Bank, without liquidating it, and pay back the money of depositors, the image of the government will be brightened."

"Directors and other officials of the PLFS are leading luxurious life and making second homes abroad by looting the money of the depositors. We firmly believe the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will never allow such misdeeds."

It was demanded at the press conference that the culprits behind the People's Leasing scandal will be brought under the ambit of law and handed down exemplary punishment. The depositors also demanded the seizure of their assets barring them from going abroad.
