Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed will visit Myanmar on December 8 with a view to increasing bilateral relations at military level and training facilities.
He will lead the Bangladesh delegation consisting of seven members. General Aziz Ahmed disclosed details of the visit while briefing reporters after his meeting with Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday.
He said the visit will help boost military-to-military cooperation and ties in military training and engagement, in addition to issues relating to improving the existing relations between the two neighboring countries. "
Our bilateral relations will be strengthened through more engagement with Myanmar. Rohingya issue will also be discussed and we hope we will find solutions on this," he said.
Earlier on Nov 27, Foreign Minister Dr Momen said the Army Chief's visit to Myanmar will benefit Bangladesh and open another 'line of negotiation' between the two countries over Rohingya repatriation.
"The visit of the Army Chief will benefit us. Myanmar is friendly to Bangladesh. It is not our enemy. We want to resolve the issue (Rohingya) through discussion. For this reason, we are pursuing diplomatic process for peaceful repatriation. Myanmar Army plays an important role in this regard," he said.
Bangladesh is currently hosting over 1.1 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district and most of them arrived there since August 25, 2017 after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing" and other rights' groups "genocide".
