Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia on Thursday underscored the need for finding out alternative agri-produces to stop tobacco farming.
"Tobacco is a cash crop, but simultaneously it is harmful for the nation. So, before stopping cultivation of tobacco, we have to find out alternate crop for the farmers," said Fazle Rabbi Mia while speaking as the chief guest at a `National Dialogue 2020? at CIRDAP auditorium, reports BSS.
Chairperson of Campaign for Good Governance Abdul Awal chaired the dialogue while Khodeja Nasrin Akter Hossain MP spoke on the occasion.
The Deputy Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to make the country drug and tobacco free by 2040. The production of tobacco is gradually falling and farmers are now cultivating maize instead of tobacco, he added.
Fazle Rabbi Mia also urged farmers to cultivate corn more instead of tobacco to utilize their land and meet the local demand of foods.
