After independence, textile mills were closed due to lack of raw cotton. To meet the shortage of raw cotton, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Cotton Development Board under the Ministry of Agriculture on December 14, 1972 to expand cotton production in the country. In addition, he gave 796 acres of land in Nekmarad area of Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon district to 325 families for cottoncultivation.
