The deadly novel coronavirus has made a double record in Bangladesh taking the lives of 40 more people and infecting 2,545 individuals. With the updates, the body count now stands at 650 and the number of infections reaches 47,151.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) came up with the information on the COVID-19 situation at a media briefing in the capital on Sunday.
Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of DGHS, addressing the briefing said, ''A total of 11,876 samples were tested in 52 authorized labs across the country in the past 24 hours. Of them, 2,545 were found to be COVID-19 positive.''
Of the 40 fresh deaths, 33 were male and seven were female, she said and added that 28 were from Dhaka division, eight from Chattogram, two from Khulna, one in Rangpur and another was from Rajshahi division.
''According to age categories, one was aged 21-30, five between 31-40, 11 between 41-50, eight within 51-60, 11 between 61-70, and four between 71-80 years old.'' she added.
Professor Nasima Sultana went on to add, ''As many as 406 patients have made recoveries since Saturday surging the total to 9,781. The recovery rate now stands at 20.74 percent.''
Coronavirus has spread to all 64 districts of the country. Many districts were put under lockdown for several weeks to contain the spread of the killer virus.
Meanwhile, public holidays ended on May 30 and the offices of the government, semi-government and autonomous bodies resumed on May 31. Shutdown imposed across the country following the outbreak of the virus also ended on May 31.
Bangladesh reported its first case of the virus on March 8 while the first death was recorded on March 18. The killer virus, which broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, has so far killed at least 372,000 people across the globe. It has infected more than 6,210,000 people in 213 countries and territories.
The US is the worst-hit country with at least 105,700 deaths and more than 1,824,000 infections. Brazil has the second highest number of infections with 501,000 cases. The country has so far recorded at least 28,800 deaths.
The UK has recorded 38,400 deaths, the highest in Europe, followed by Italy with at least 33,400 casualties. France has lost at least 28,700 people followed by Spain with at least 27,100 casualties. Belgium has so far reported more than 9,400 deaths, followed by Germany with no fewer than 8,600 deaths while Iran has recorded at least 7,700 casualties.
Canada has lost at least 7,000 citizens followed by the Netherlands with at least 5,900 casualties. China, the epicenter of the virus, has so far recoded at least 4,600 deaths. India has recorded at least 5,400 deaths with more than 160,000 infections. Pakistan has so far counted 1,400 deaths and more than 69,000 infections. Sri Lanka has counted only 10 deaths and 1,631 infections.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 a pandemic. The outbreak of the virus has brought almost the entire world to a standstill.
